One hundred and eighteen acres of farmland on one mile of the Rappahannock River.
One hundred and eighteen acres of farmland on one mile of the Rappahannock River.
Bushy Park Farm, located in the Tidewater area of Virginia, was a prize-winning dairy farm up until 1993. It is named for Bushy Park Creek, which flows through the property. The farm was bought in 1939 by Edward C. Anderson and is owned and managed by his descendants as Bushy Park Farm LLC. In addition to the 118 acres on the Rappahannock River, which are currently growing corn, wheat, and soybeans, Bushy Park Farm LLC also owns several other nearby parcels of land, including 91 additional acres of crop fields and 103 acres of woodland. Our three-bedroom farmhouse, surrounded by the 91 acres of fields, is currently available for vacation rental, and includes access to our mile of private beach.
There are many things that could be done with Bushy Park Farm's mile of sandy beach and acres of undeveloped riverfront land. There are silos that could be converted to unique homes with stunning views. There's an old commercial milking parlor and show barn that could morph into a restaurant and event space. The farmland could be preserved as open space. And of course it could be transformed into a vacation home community. The farm is not currently for sale, but the family is looking at a number of ideas and options. Please tell us yours!
Locals call it "shark's tooth beach." There are also many other fossils to find, like the occasional whale vertebra and a profusion of "Chesapecten jeffersonius," fossilized scallop shells from the early Pliocene epoch, 4-5 million years ago. We are working on offering beach access to Middlesex residents and visitors. Check here or on Facebook for updates.
Our mile of beach extends from the channel at far upper left (we own the spit of land on the other side of the channel, as well) to the line of woods on the bottom right. The farm also owns a large chunk of the woods at bottom right, extending from the road at top right to the back edge of a lot on the waterfront which is owned by another party. At the top left and center, you'll see the inlet formed by Bushy Park Creek, for which the property was named.
Our big, blue Harvestore silo soars above the landscape, offering some pretty sweet views. We're dreaming of making it into a hip vacation home someday.
Our woods, located on a separate tract of land that is inland from the main farm property, are full of a mix of hardwoods that are at least 80 years old. A sandy-bottom stream runs through part of the property, which is filled with deer, box turtles, and other wildlife.
